Famine Among the PokotIn the West Pokot District of northwest Kenya rain has not fallen in months. The land is dry and dusty, watering holes and riverbeds have dried up, and the people are struggling to stay alive. Due to recent droughts, famine is threatening the Pokot and particularly those most vulnerable, the children and older people. Harvesters’ partner, Pokot Outreach Ministries (POM) is currently operating three orphanages in East and West Pokot which care for 450 children. They are struggling to supply the orphans with enough food to eat; at times the children have to go a day with only water. The International Red Cross and other organizations are struggling to provide the people with sufficient food. Estimates claim that 200,000 are facing death by starvation.
